Music production tuition

Updated: 4 days ago

Hi! My name is James / Vice beats. I'm a Portishead (UK) based music producer. I've been teaching music to people of all ages and abilities across the UK and beyond for over 15 years now.

Alongside teaching, I work professionally as Vice beats, producing music released and broadcast internationally across BBC, ITV and Channel 4, alongside collaborations with artists across the UK, US and Europe. I currently lecture within Higher Education music programmes and have supported young people and adult learners across community, educational and professional music environments for over 15 years.

“James is not only a brilliant producer and musician, but he also has a gift for communication with his students.”

I specialise in teaching Logic Pro 11 (and earlier versions), and can help you (anyone from aged 6 and up) to understand how to make your own songs, using samples, live recording and digital instruments.

I take time to understand what you enjoy musically, what you’d like to create, and how you learn best. I will work at your speed, and whether you’ve never made a song or you want to tool up, I’ll help you to make some great music!

After a couple of sessions, you will have your first song in draft form, and we can keep working on refining it, or continue creating. We'll work at your own pace.

Sessions work best weekly initially if you do not have access to Logic Pro at home. If you do then fortnightly is fine, and I will give you some self-led goals ahead of the next session.

Sessions can include:

  • Beatmaking & sampling

  • Songwriting & arrangement

  • Recording vocals

  • Mixing & effects

  • Learning Logic Pro workflows

  • Podcasting creation / editing

  • Creative confidence & music development

  • Artist branding & release guidance

I am also available via Whatsapp (9am - 5pm) if you want to drop me a message if you get stuck with anything and I can help remotely)

Below is various info that will hopefully answer your initial questions. When you're ready, you can book your intro session (or full sessions) via the Calendly link:

______________________ TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

Cancellations:

Please note that if a session is cancelled within 24 hours of the session time, half the session fee will be payable. As sessions are planned in advance, cancellations within 24 hours impact my ability to offer the slot elsewhere.

No-contact policy: If you are running late, please contact me as soon as possible. If no attempt has been made to contact me within the first 15 minutes of the session start time, the full session fee may still be charged. I will always attempt to call or message before ending a session. For 2-hour sessions, please understand that extended lateness may result in the remainder of the session being cancelled, with up to 50% of the session fee still payable. Repeated no-contact late arrivals may require full payment for future missed sessions.

Pre-decision chat: I understand that this can be an expense, and I am happy to have a chat over the phone / video call initially to say hello, answer any questions, and ensure you feel comfortable going ahead. I teach music because I love it, this is not a money spinner, and I want to make sure these sessions are the right fit for everyone involved.

Payment:

I will take payment on the day, I take cash, and can take card payments too (I have a Paypal secure card payment app - and can send digital receipts)

Online and in-person: I am based in Portishead, and happy to travel. Generally I find that in-person sessions are more productive, however online can still work very effectively, but does help if you have your own copy of Logic Pro. I travel regularly to Bristol for sessions and maybe able to fit sessions around this to avoid additional travel costs.

If you have any questions, or any issues booking sessions, please email me - eqmusiccic@gmail.com (with tuition in the title) or Whatsapp (9am - 5pm) +447793726363

I contacted James because I wanted to better understand Logic Pro after trying to teach myself at home, hoping to finish a few songs I had started recording. It quickly became clear that his professional knowledge and experience across the music industry - from production to performance - were exactly what I needed.

Through his tuition and support, the journey grew into something much bigger. James helped transform the early work I had done on my songs, elevating them and shaping a cohesive sound across the album project. His technical skills, creative input, and encouragement have been invaluable, and I’m truly grateful to have learned from and worked with him.

And when the next creative spark ignites, I know exactly…

James is not only a brilliant producer and musician, but he also has a gift for communication with his students.

He is kind, patient and a genuinely lovely person to all that come through his door.

His depth of knowledge in music production makes for an invaluable experience. Whether you are looking to learn from scratch, or to bolster your skills and knowledge, he will equip you with tools necessary to progress.

As someone who makes music and has assisted him in his lessons, I learn something new every time.

James was a really great tutor for my music mad teen, who ended up making a song for his Grandma for her birthday - he really knows his stuff, and went above and beyond. I would definitely recommend him.
